It seems to me that strip/bin packing algorithms must balance between two criterion:
1) how long it takes to perform the packing
2) how area-efficient the packing is (i.e. how minimal wasted area is)
I am interested in algorithms which optimize 1) as much as possible, while still optimizing 2) to some extent.
I am wondering if there are (hopefully recent) reviews which present 2D strip packing results with such an emphasis? I suspect that such reviews will focus quite a bit on the distribution of shapes of the input rectangles.
