I am following through James Molloy OS tutorials and I can't get my head around the GDT. I understand that it contains entries that describe segments, what I don't understand is,how are the segment descriptors used. I will appreciate it if someone explains how the segment descriptors are used.

$\begingroup$ I understand that the Global Descriptor Table contains entries that describe segments not exclusively. I don't understand [how the segment descriptors are] used "modern 32-bit x86 operating systems use the LDT very little, primarily to run legacy 16-bit code" $\endgroup$ – greybeard Dec 14 '19 at 13:32
