Given five memory partitions 200kB, 600kB, 250kB, 450kB and 500kB which are fixed and in order. processes of 212kB, 517kB, 115kB and 430kB in order.

In First-Fit order

212 kB --> 600 kB partition (388 kB Remain)
517 kB --> No memory location
115 kB --> 200 kB partition ( 85 kB Remain)
430 kB --> 450 kB partition ( 20 kB Remain)

I calculated internal fragmentation as
(200-115)+(600-212)+(450-430) = 493 kB

What I want to know is if there is any external fragmentation? I know it says internal fragmentation occurs only on dynamic memory partitions. But since there is a 517 kB process which is not assigned isn't there any external fragmentation?

  • $\begingroup$ Welcome to ComputerScience@SE. processes of 212kB, 517kB, … may commonly be called requests: can you give/hyperlink(&summarise) the definition of internal and external fragmentation for this question? $\endgroup$ – greybeard Feb 10 '20 at 7:41
