I am studying about IPV4 header.

For some options, such as one that records route a packet has taken, 40 bytes is far too small, making that option useless.

What does this mean?

What I know?

IHL contains number of 32 bit words in IP header. Min value of IHL=5=20 bytes. Max value of IHL=60 bytes.

i.e Options=40 bytes.

How much byte do we need to record the route the packet has taken? Can you give estimation?
